When a Muse Alighted

by Dorothea Barth

A mystery to ponder
Arrived on distant shore
What future lies in wait for me
Will it be less or more?

But soon she spread the joy of song
With vigor and with vision
Inspired an artful discipline
With heart and with precision

Sing with jubilation
Leave fiddle not unstrung
Let music ring out everywhere
Our universal tongue

The music scattered magic
As song will often do
And all who listened formed a dream:
I'd like to learn that too!

Before too long the many came
Musicians soon to be
They heard about old masters
And folksong's tapestry

Sing with jubilation
Leave fiddle not unstrung
Let music ring out everywhere
Our universal tongue

Tonight ten years have floated by
Since that momentous day
When a muse alighted
And taught them how to play

Now joyfully they gather
Their song will never end
Since once you love the music
You have a lifelong friend

Sing with jubilation
Leave fiddle not unstrung
Let music ring out everywhere
Our universal tongue
