Oktoberfest

Bert and Dorothy Barth are now available for Oktoberfest celebrations! We are a duo of violin and recorders (the recorder is the predecessor of the modern flute, beloved by the Von Trapp family of Sound of Music fame). Dorothy plays violin, and Bert plays four sizes of recorders.

Ours is a folkloric sound that takes the listener through Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. We can also include a few ballads from Sound of Music. Most of the other numbers are upbeat folkloric dances.

While our sound is lively, it is not wild or raucous; if you are looking for a very loud pub sound, you may wish to book a larger band.

We can bring quality amplification; we will need to be placed near an electric outlet. We prefer indoor acoustics, but if outdoors need a sheltered area to protect our fine instruments, since September and October can get hot in Southern California.

Below are audio samples taken from a live performance recorded at a retirement residence September 21, 2018. It will give you a good idea of our sound and presentation.

Both tunes in this medley are Zwiefachers, a dance form dating back to the late 18th century and danced primarily in Bavaria. The Zwiefacher's distinct rhythmic structure alternates between 3 and 2 beats per bar.
