Dorothea has a long-standing interest in oriental dance (also known as "belly dance" in the U.S.). She first discovered this colorful, ancient dance art in the 1970's, when there was a great surge of interest in oriental dance. Her early lessons were at recreation centers and YMCA's in the San Gabriel Valley, and she continued studies and workshops after she moved to San Diego. The style she learned is improvisatory and sometimes referred to as "vintage oriental" or "American Cabaret" style of belly dance.
Her most recent evolution in dance is to do improvisatory creations with her husband Bert improvising on wooden flute (recorder) while Dorothea dances with zils, wings, fan veils, or traditional veils. We call this unique collaboration "Flute and Flow". We are available for community and private events that would like a flowing, colorful, ambient entertainment. We performed Flute and Flow at Alta Vista Botanical Gardens for their 2022 Earth Day festival, alternating dance segments with folkloric music on flute and tambourine.
